Lebanon, OH (Oct. 1, 2022) – Warren County Career Center (WCCC) has recently announced a new Registered Apprenticeship for warehouse workers. WCCC offers career and technical education for high school and adult students that leads to success in the workforce and in life. WCCC offers 10 full-time adult education programs, with 600 or more hours of training, and 22 high school programs that present opportunities to earn industry certifications, college credits, and scholarships.
WCCC has partnered with the Supply Chain Automation Workforce Hub (the Hub), a U.S. Department of Labor intermediary working to recruit and train skilled workers in supply chain automation through the development and growth of Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs). The Hub is supporting WCCC’s new state-approved RAP, which plans to train more than 10 “Warehouse Worker” Apprentices, from entry-level to frontline supervisor.
The Hub successfully facilitated a strong partnership with ApprenticeOhio, Ohio’s authorized state apprenticeship agency, to help register WCCC’s RAP with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. WCCC developed a related training instruction course to add to the existing curriculum based on the industry-recognized Certified Logistics Technician national credential curriculum originally created by the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council. With the Hub’s technical assistance, WCCC has also added OSHA-10, a 10-hour training course teaching basic safety and health information to general industry workers, in addition to First Aid/CPR and a Train the Trainer curriculum (instructor-led training material to teach “train-the-trainer” workshops) to bolster its RAP.
The Hub will provide ongoing technical assistance by connecting WCCC with relevant national and local community partners as well as supply chain automation companies interested in utilizing WCCC’s RAP training. Sinclair Community College, based in Dayton, Ohio, plans to work with the Hub and WCCC to ensure that RAP participation will also count toward college credit for RAP participants who will concurrently seek continuing education. The Hub will also assist WCCC in applying for incentive funding that will help to offset the cost of training and enhance hands-on instruction capabilities at WCCC.
Warren County hosts some of the largest employers in Ohio, including Amazon, Honeywell, and L3Harris. These three manufacturing, wholesale trade, warehousing, and transportation industry leaders all post within the top 10 highest-paying jobs in the U.S. After a sharp decline in manufacturing and related supply chain industries in the early 2000s, specifically supply chain automation, employment in these sectors has been on an upward trend since 2010. However, there is still a gap between the currently available supply chain automation jobs and people with the necessary training and experience: in 2020, there were 2,447 job postings, but only 733 resumes that met the job posting requirements.
